Rocky' s News & Views

THURSDAY JAN. 19TH. STUMBLIN', BUMBLIN' REPUBLICANS COULD KEEP PRESIDENT OBAMA IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

THURSDAY 5:00PM. CHECK OUT FISHING NEWS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE.

These Republican candidates all have flaws. Our candidates include a flip-flopper on how many times you can be married. Another guy is so goodlooking, Grecian formula wants his endorsement. We got a bomb thrower and I haven't figured out the 4th guy. He was, however just declared the Winner in Iowa.

Meanwhile, with oil prices about to get near $4.00 a gallon, the guy in the big house cancelled construction of the Canadian/American pipeline. November can't get here soon enough.

Here's a chuckle. My 8 year old Grandson is a due paying full-fledge member of the Sreen Actors Guild. As a member, the Guild has been sending him all the movies that have a chance at Oscar recognition. He gets a ballot to vote and comment on each movie. Upcoming projects for Jackson. He has been in New York doing meet and greets. He met Jack Nicolson and Warrem Beatty. He said Jack just kept looking at him and laughing. He will be soon heading to Los Angeles for screen tests. He also must do some re-shoots of the movie he was filming last Summer. It's due out late Summer and Fall because it's storyline includes Halloween as the season featured in the movie.

I can't believe I'll be in the air heading for Mexico when the Pats kick off this upcoming Sunday. Geez! The first 6 days in Mexico were awarded to my wife for great sales. We got a 6 star resort. Up until the past year, a 5 star resort was as high as you could go. I'm sure an bedette will be included. My wife and I had our 1rst bedette encounter in Spain back in the 70's. We didn't have a clue. The maid was not impressed to see our sox and underwear hanging all around the edge of the bedette.

AND FINALLY. RECREATIONAL COD FISHING IN 2012!

You are going to hear some real sour, horrible things over the next few weeks. No fishing allowed for any groundfish in the Gulf ofMaine! tthat's the big poison pill being floated out to scare the crap out of all people that make a living fishing for cod, haddock, etc. in the Gulf of Maine. I wasn't at the meeting the other day that was open to the public. I guess everyone that went to the meeting, commercial and recreational fishermen all went home with a full diaper.

You want my prediction? I'll do my Nevelle Chamberlin thing. "There will be be codfishing in our time." I sure hope I'm right. Over the past 30 years, I have attended meetings of this sort. I attended these meetings with Brad Cook of Atlantic Fleet. Also, Joe Grady and Tom Grady from Clipper Fleet were usually in attendence too. We have seen it all. If the NOAA people use their previous Methods in setting rules, there first move is to throw a bomB in the meeting room to get everybodys' attention. They tell us horrible proposals that would mean everybodys livelyhood is in the toilet. Everybody goes home and buys a 50 gallon drum of ink for their printer and starts writing to whomever they think can help them. But, I don't think that's even needed this time. Everybody that can do some type of action already knows about the giant poison pill for the end of fishing in the Gulf of Maine. Plus, they are already working on a alternate solution to deal with NOAA.

Here is what I think and hope will happen. In 4 to 6 weeks, new proposals will be floated out to the Commercial and Recreational fishing industry. I can't speak for commercial fishermen, but I am hoping for a recreational proposal of some where between 3 and 5 cod to be kept by recreational fishermen with a reduced size limit of around 19 to 21 inches for a legal codfish. The reduction in size will eliminate the claim of all discareded, undersize cod die after being released. With this scenerio, there will be more cod aboard a recreational charty/party boat because cod catches were way down this past season. So let's wait and see before finding a high ledge to jump from. That's just my take. But, the NOAA fisheries has used the poison pill play for many years to get what goal they want to acheive. This is just my thoughts on this subject. But, I do have over 30 years of experience watching this process.
